A checklist for the analysis of cultural information in a specific educational material

  1. How much of the material in % is about culture topics?
  2. Is the other culture presented as something very different, focus on differences- or is there a dialogue between cultures?
  3. Is there “negotiation” between two cultures/ discussion of intersubjective topics, like food?
  4. Does the material focus on the Lebenswelt, everyday world?
  5. How is the culture/ the event in the culture/ the person from a culture brought into the horizon of the person addressed (reader, learner, viewer)?
  6. Is there anything about underlying values of a culture?
  7. Is the other presented as normal or very different? Simplified or differentiated?
  8. Is there a recognition of the other culture (Wertschätzung des Anderen)?
  9. Are there any expressions hinting at misunderstanding, limits of understanding?
  10. Do we learn anything about the attitude of the authors of this material?
